Education in Ancient Mithila

This book gives the detailed account of the origin and development of educational ideas and institutions in ancient Mithila, a region which has had a pivotal status in the cultural history of India. Due to its rich intellectual heritage, Mithila attracted scholars from different parte of the world and also produced celebrated scholars of international repute. Their contributions in their respective fields of studies are still considered unassailable.

The book “Education in Ancient Mithila” is divided into five chapters, each filled with in-depth study on the subject from earliest times to 12th century A.D. While chapter one introduces the land, legend and people of Mithila, the second chapter discusses the different educational ideas, important rituals and educational centres. The third chapter high-lights the curriculum, exami nation system and conferring the degrees. The fourth chapter gives detailed accounts of some eminent scholars of Mithila and teacher- student relationship. Besides the concluding chapter, the book contains an appendix of the present historical and archaeological sites of educational importance.
