This book takes readers on a journey back to the 18th century, witnessing the unification of Nepal, the intrigues and machinations of the British East India Company, and the events leading to the first partition of the country through the formalisation of the boundary between Nepal and India. Spanning nearly a century, these developments had profound and far-reaching negative impacts on Mithila/Tirhut, a historically significant region that was divided between two nations. Despite this physical division, the people of Mithila remained deeply connected to their brethren across the newly drawn political boundary. While the ruling families were undermined by British treachery and the greed of newly established smaller zamindars, the region’s cultural, linguistic, and intellectual unity endured. As descendants of great sages such as Janak and Yajnavalkya, and as inheritors of Mithila’s rich cultural and intellectual legacy, the people of the region remained bound by their shared heritage and the enduring ties of brotherhood, epitomised by Bhagawati Sita.

This book contains unpublished lectures and articles related to the society of Mithila, by late Dr Hetukar Jha, professor and HoD Sociology, Patna University. works were discovered among his documents. The book includes a short life sketch of the scholar who devoted his life to the service of the state and his region and the last interview containing his views on areas of concern for researchers on Bihar. The scholars, students and people in general, interested in issues concerning Mithila, would find them useful.
